This week in Year 6 we have been exploring prefixes in our spelling lessons. From in, un, mis, and sub, we have been mastering how a small change at the start of a word can flip its meaning completely.

In Language, we zoomed in on photographs of unfamiliar faces and the children magically transformed them into fully fledged characters. From mysterious travellers to misunderstood villains to heroes with unexpected hobbies, Year 6 wrote some very impressive character descriptions. Not only did they describe every wrinkle, scar and hat but they also crafted imaginative backstories and personalities to match. We were stunned by the creativity and detail—some of these characters could walk straight into a novel!

We also tackled up-scaling simple sentences, sprinkling in powerful adjectives and adverbs to turn plain statements into vivid, exciting imagery. A once humble “The dog barked” evolved into “The scruffy, wide‑eyed dog barked sharply at the mysterious shadow.”

In Maths, we’ve been solidifying our knowledge of improper fractions, mixed numbers, equivalent fractions, ordering fractions and fractions of amounts.

We have also enjoyed some free writing time, crafting their very own time‑travel adventures. We’ve visited the future and the past, and as part of our inquiry, we also looked at how education has changed since Victorian times. The children have decided that modern schooling—despite the fractions—is much better.

As if all that wasn’t enough, Year 6 have been jiving! Yes, actual 1950s jive moves. The hall has been alive with spins, steps, laughter and a lot of very enthusiastic toe‑tapping. In PE we’ve also seen fantastic basketball skills on display.
