Week 5: Survival Skills & Sharp Angles

From the precision of protractors to the rugged wilderness of desert islands, it has been a week of high-stakes learning and critical thinking! Here is what we have been exploring:

Maths: Angles & Problem Solving

This week, we turned our focus to the world of Geometry. We’ve been identifying different types of angles—acute, obtuse, and right angles (some reflex too!)—and learning the delicate art of using a protractor to measure and draw them accurately.

To put our brains to the test, we also spent time on problem-solving challenges, applying our logic to crack some tricky mathematical puzzles.

Language: Extra! Extra! Read All About It!

We’ve stepped into the shoes of journalists this week as we began exploring News Reports. We’ve been deconstructing newspapers to see how they differ from stories or diary entries.

We’ve focused on the "anatomy" of a report, including:

  • Headlines & Bylines: Catching the reader's eye and naming the reporter.

  • Layout: Why we use columns and pictures with captions.

  • The 5 Ws: Ensuring every report answers Who, What, Where, When, and Why.

Topic: Desert Island Survival

Our "Water" theme took a tropical turn as we imagined being stranded on a desert island! The children took part in a Diamond Ranking exercise, where they had to debate and rank items washed up on shore based on their survival value.

To help us prepare, we’ve been watching Bear Grylls in action. We analyzed his survival techniques to see how he makes use of the environment—lessons we hopefully won't have to use for real anytime soon!

Mayday Mile & More

Our Daily Mayday Mile continues! The children are showing great resilience, much like the survivalists we’ve been studying. It’s been the perfect way to start our mornings with fresh air and a sense of purpose for the RNLI.

Have a fantastic weekend!

The Year 5 Team

A massive well done to Abigail and Aalayiah who won the Welsh Schools FA U10 Girls Final last night. They represented Thornhill Primary School playing for Cardiff & Vale.
