☀️ Week 10: Pushing Through the Heatwave!

What a completely upside-down and unforgettable week it has been in Year 5! From a quiet start to record-breaking temperatures, the children have done an amazing job adapting to some very unusual circumstances. Here is a look at how we navigated the week:

🌡️ The Great British Heatwave

We started the week with our scheduled INSET day on Monday, but the temperature dial certainly turned up the moment we stepped back into the classroom on Tuesday. By Wednesday, the heat was impossible to ignore, leading to an emergency school closure on Thursday as temperatures hit a staggering 37°C!

We returned today to a very warm building, but the children were absolute superstars. A massive well done to everyone for powering through the heat, staying focused, and making it to the weekend with a smile.

✍️ Language: Crafting Our Settings

On Tuesday, we kicked off our new language work by developing setting descriptions for our upcoming Oceanmaker stories. The children have been using fantastic imagery to paint pictures with their words—honestly, the sweltering weather outside provided some excellent inspiration for creating dramatic, intense atmospheres!

🎲 Maths: Certain or Impossible?

In Maths, we started looking at Probability and calculating the likelihood of different events happening. We've been sorting scenarios into what is likely, unlikely, certain, or impossible.

The children had a lot of fun with the vocabulary. For instance, it was certain that the building was hot this week, but thankfully, it's impossible for this extreme heat to last forever!

🐬 Looking Ahead: Rescheduled Concerts & Aquarium Trip

We have a brilliantly busy week lined up next week (and hopefully a much cooler one!). Please keep an eye out for updates on:

  • The School Choir Concerts: These have now been rescheduled, and we can't wait for you to hear the children sing.

  • Our Aquarium Trip (Wednesday): We are heading off for our big trip this coming Wednesday! It is the perfect celebration of all our hard work on our water and ecosystem topics.

Hopefully, everyone gets a chance to jump into a paddling pool this weekend and enjoy some slightly cooler weather.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

The Year 5 Team

A massive well done to Abigail and Aalayiah who won the Welsh Schools FA U10 Girls Final last night. They represented Thornhill Primary School playing for Cardiff & Vale.
