What a fantastic final week of the half term it has been! Year 5 has ended this first stretch of the school year on a high note, combining outdoor math challenges, energetic speech performances, and thoughtful classroom debates. Here is a recap of our week:
We took grid references to a whole new level this week by exploring coordinates:
Battleships: The children put their spatial skills to the test in classroom coordinate battles, carefully tracking x- and y-axes to sink enemy ships.
Playground Grid Hunt: Taking our learning outdoors, the children navigated the school yard using coordinate clues to hunt down and locate hidden targets across the grounds!
Following on from our persuasive writing last week, the children took center stage to perform their speeches!
After practicing their delivery, the class turned into a panel of respectful critics. We evaluated our peers' performances to decide:
Who brought the bossiest imperative verbs to command the room?
Who delivered the most persuasive arguments that had everyone convinced?
Seeing the children speak with such confidence, expression, and flair was a real highlight of the week!
In our topic work, we continued exploring identity by celebrating the unique talents each child brings to Year 5.
We also tackled big questions around belonging and fitting in. The children examined different social scenarios and worked together to evaluate whether actions were positive or negative, reflecting on how we can create a supportive community where everyone feels accepted for who they are.
The children have worked amazingly hard over these first eight weeks of Year 5. They have settled into new routines, tackled challenging learning, and shown wonderful curiosity every single day.
