🏰 Castles and Homes in Wales

Our inquiry has continued to spark curiosity this week as we dug deeper into life inside a Welsh castle. We revisited the different roles people might have had and built on this by holding our very own “job interviews”! The children spoke confidently about which castle job they would like to do, why they would be good at it, and the skills they could bring. Their answers were thoughtful, imaginative, and often wonderfully funny!

We also explored how to organise information about castles using a Carroll diagram. The children sorted pictures into stone/not stone and found in a castle/not found in a castle, which helped them make connections between what they’ve learned and how we classify objects. This will support us beautifully as we begin to look at different types of homes in Wales after the Easter break.

Alongside this, we continued learning about key castle features—moats, battlements, arrow slits, and more—and why these were important for defence. The children are becoming real castle experts!

🔢 Maths In maths, we continued exploring mass and capacity. The children estimated the weight of different castle objects and then ordered them from lightest to heaviest, using balance scales to check their predictions. They also compared containers and used language such as full, empty, half‑full, and nearly full as they investigated capacity. As well as this, the children have independently been practising finding doubles using numicon pieces.

✏️ Language and Phonics

Our language sessions focused on suffixes this week. We explored –ed (past tense) and –ing (happening now), looking at how adding these endings changes the meaning of a word. The children enjoyed spotting these in sentences and having a go at writing their own examples.

In phonics, we practised the ee sound alongside revisiting tricky words and cvc/cvcc words. Through word‑building, sound‑sorting, and phonics detective challenges, the children are becoming increasingly confident at identifying and using these sounds in both reading and writing.

🗣️ Welsh

In Welsh this week, we revisited "dw i'n hoffi" and "dw i ddim yn hoffi" alongside some new vocabulary for different animals and types of pets.

🌼 Easter Fun Towards the end of the week, we enjoyed some Easter‑themed activities. The children made bunny faces, took part in phonics egg hunts, and completed colour‑by‑CVC challenges. It was a lovely, creative way to finish the term.

Best wishes, The Year 1 Team 🌟
