Reception Weekly News

This week in Drawing Club, we have been reading the story The Leaf Thief by Alice Hemming. We drew Squirrel, the forest where he lives, and took him on exciting adventures. The children designed imaginative ways to catch the falling leaves and created magical forest doors to travel through. We also explored some adventurous new vocabulary, including pilfered, misplaced, conundrum, and catastrophe!

In Monster Phonics, we have been revising the sounds we have already learned: s, a, t, p, i, n, m, d, g, c, k and ck. This week we introduced the new sounds e, u, and r. The children have been using these sounds to build three-letter words and are developing a fantastic bank of keywords. We enjoyed a word hunt around the classroom, searching for words that Miss Oh No had hidden, and had great fun playing word bingo. Don't forget to visit Google Classroom, where you can access the PowerPoint and flashcards to practise at home.

In Maths, we have been comparing the sizes of objects using vocabulary such as big, bigger, smaller, biggest, and smallest. We have also been exploring mass, using balance scales to compare heavy and light objects from our shopping bag. We discussed what happens to the scales when objects are heavier or lighter and made predictions before testing our ideas.

We have also been developing our fine motor skills by learning how to use scissors safely and effectively. The children enjoyed creating colourful confetti and snipping straws to strengthen their cutting skills.
