Reception children are exposed to incidental Welsh spoken by staff and are encouraged to use basic Welsh phrases, learning through songs and rhymes. We have daily 10-15 minute Helpwr Heddiw sessions, covering a range of topics. The children also attend a weekly Welshing singing assembly and celebrate the Eisteddfod by producing Welsh inspired artwork and learning Welsh poems. 

 

Welsh topics covered include: 

 

Autumn Term 

- Greetings (Bore da, pwy wyt ti? sut wyt ti?

- Weather (Sut mae'r tywydd heddiw?) 

- Asking to go to the toilet (Ga i fynd i'r ty bach?)

 

 

Spring Term 

- Weather (Sut mae'r tywydd heddiw?) 

- Body parts (Beth sy'n bod?)

- Counting (Counting in Welsh

 

 

Summer Term 

- I like/ I don't like (Dw i hoffi / dwi ddim yn hoffi)

- What's in the box? (Beth sydd yn y bocs?) 

- What shape? (Pa Siap?) 

 

Thornhill Primary School are subscribed to the Books Trust Cymru, Pori Drwy Stori initiative which provides bilingual resources designed for Reception children. 

We host two parental engagement events through Pori Drwy Stori, during the Autumn and Spring Term.
